Palladio and Wren had tremedous impact on the design of buildings from simple housing to entire cities. Why do you think their styles became such a dominate force in the design of the United States? Answer the question and respond to another post. Student answer in blackboard Palladio, although all of his works are centralized in a small part of Italy, somehow became the biggest name in Western architecture. I believe this is because he also wrote The Four Books of Architecture in his career. This book provided insight to everyone to how be built his designs and what rules he followed. He gave them the answers that they would have likely searched for in the future. It would have been easier for people in the United States to use his design rules rather than to rely on their own creativity. His work was simple and Classical looking. Wren was so successful because he rebuily London after the fire. People could have found his works easily. Rather than just making pieces sparaticly through Europe, he built in a centralized location where people could enjoy it. He made his work look very prestigious which is appealing to people in the United States. Why did Thomas Jefferson decide to use Greek building forms in the newly formed United States? Student answer in blackboard Jefferson became a fan of Andrea Palladio’s work and I think that’s what inspired him to use Greek building forms in the United States. Jefferson was in France as a diplomat in 1784. It is then when he observed the architecture that influenced his work on the Monticello and the Virginia State Capitol. Jefferson designed the Virginia State Capitol to have a temple look, just like the temples in Rome and Greece, with the large columns. He was also influenced by reading about ancient and modern architectural writings.
