Welcome to Week 3! You are certainly progressing well and I continue to be impressed with your efforts. Please remember that when you complete your work that you are providing YOUR understanding of the course materials. Plagiarism is not taken lightly and it is imperative at this level that your work be entirely in your own words. You will be expected to utilize outside resources for both your discussion board work and your written assignments each week. You will not, however, want to copy and paste your work directly from your resources. It is important that you summarize your learning into your own words to show the reader that you have a solid understanding of the course learning. There is documentation found within the course documents of the classroom that will help you understand plagiarism and how to avoid it this term.
This week you will read Chapters 3 and 4 from your textbook. These chapters focus on designing quality, innovation, and creativity. These are very important factors in meeting and beating the competition. You will also review the articles “Innovation Risk” and “Blow Out” which are listed in your weekly reading.
Please remember to be proactive in your studies. It is recommended that you check into the classroom frequently throughout the week and participate often. By doing so, you will become an active participant in the course and will build your learning skills as well as improving your employment skills. Taking the time to be an active participant will prime you for management moving forward.

W3 Lecture 2 “Design, Creativity, and Innovation” Quality Management Design, Creativity, and Innovation
You have had a busy couple of weeks with learning about quality and strategic planning. This week you will continue your learning as we dive into design, creativity, and innovation. Imagine a workplace without design, creativity, and innovation? It’s really hard to imagine, right? That’s because everything that has been created is based on someone’s creative idea to improve their day-to-day tasks.
Look around you at this very moment. What do you see? I am looking at a mobile phone, a computer, and various products that make my day easier. Without my internet modem and my computer, I would not be communicating with you today. The small mobile phone sitting on my desk looks significantly different than the first mobile phone that I owned (picture a suit case with a cord…), not to mention its capabilities that it has that my first phone did not. Surely the tools you use today function differently than they did last year, five years ago, etc.
The need for creativity and innovation is a necessity for success in an organization. Companies are always looking for what it takes to stay ahead of the competition and having creativity and innovation in the workplace is exactly what is necessary to make that happen. Are you the creative type? Does innovation come easily to you in though? If not, that’s okay, that’s what teams are for and the teams that we work in will continuously help us in meeting the needs of our customers. Don’t be afraid to work with others because by doing so, you truly are helping your organization to succeed.
Now that we have established the importance of creativity, let’s think a little more in depth about it. We have a fabulous product or service prepared to offer to our employees, but how do we get this product or service to our customers? The need for creativity expands beyond the product and truly continues into the marketing of the product overall. If it wasn’t for marketing, we wouldn’t know the product or service exist. Take a moment to look at the newspaper or log onto your favorite shopping site online. Chances are you will see advertisements. These advertisements are going to catch your attention and entice you to spend your money. If the advertisements work, you will have success. Though, there is a chance that if there is an advertisement for one product or service listed, there is an advertisement for a similar product or service and these could be for other companies. Think about what it takes to get your product to be the one that sells!
An example of this would be with the current mobile service companies. Sprint is looking to compete with Verizon and AT&T. Their newest advertisement comes in the form of cutting your bill in half if you switch to them (Sprint, 2014). This has many people flocking to their stores, website, and phone customer service to switch as many feel their mobile phone bills are a bit out of reach in affordability. However, it is important to read the fine print as a consumer because you will quickly see that though your bill may be cut in half, it is only going to be effective for one year and you will be expected to replace your mobile phone as they will not allow you to use your current phone for their newest promotion. When I contacted them myself on this, I found that my bill would be much lower this year, but would be nearly $75 more per month in upcoming years. For those that read the fine print, they may find that staying with Verizon or AT&T makes sense. However, others will look past the future cost in order to obtain the current savings. What do you feel will happen with these Sprint customers next year when they see the increase in their bill? Chances are, Sprint will have some disappointed customers.
Taking the time to provide a solid advertising plan for your product or service is almost as important as the product or service itself. It is essential to consider your current customers as well as your future customers. Taking the time to ensure that your customers feel just as important as new customers is important too. Can you think of a product or service that you use that you feel loyalty should count for something? My guess is you probably can and this is what the company in which you are a customer of is hoping for. Do you remember what drew your attention to this product or service initially? Was it an advertisement that you saw? Did a coupon or gimmick draw your attention? These are all ideas to considering when introducing your quality product or service to the public.
Chapters 3 and 4 will provide you with the necessary information for understanding design, creativity, and innovation. Having the knowledge to create and market a product or service successfully will help you to stay ahead of the competition. Your main objective in finishing the weekly learning is to evaluate ways in which system reliability can be enhanced. This week you learned the importance of reliability and the role that it plays in quality management. Consider your recent purchases that you have made over the past year. Using what you have learned this week, define a product that you have purchased that you feel have met reliability standards. Also, describe a product that you feel did not meet reliability standards.
Your initial response should be a minimum of 150 words. Your work should be in your own words and should include research to support your response. Be sure to avoid Wikipedia as a resource as this is not a reliable source. Include your resources at the end of your response. Once you have completed your response, you will want to respond to at least two (2) of your classmates responses. Please remember that your responses to your classmates should be substantive and should promote additional discussion within the classroom. Simple “I agree” responses will not be counted towards your participation grade.
